Was in charge of horse & cattle station for father when his parents were bankrupted at Greenough by rust, floods & fire. Went to Busselton. Farmer & grazier "Birnside". JP 1873. Mate on Govt. vessel 'Adela' 1874. By 1880 was engaged in pearl
fishing & suffered cyclone damage. In partnership with brother C.S. Gascoyne pastoral station. Inspector of Pearl Fisheries, Shark Bay, on 'Genista' for 6 years. Gov. Res. Roebourne 1896-1900. Retired to Perth.
